Open Golf Competition at Hacienda Del Alamo Golf Resort - Report
Golf The Costas in association with the Costa TV Times hosted its first open golf competition at Hacienda Del Alamo Golf Resort last Wednesday. In mid June here in Spain the weather is normally the last thing we have to worry about but not this year the two days prior to the competition saw some heavy rain storms but the forecast for Wednesday the competition day was good.
It was an early start to the day with the competition being an Individual Stableford with a shotgun start at 09.30am, the sun was shining as the field of 64 players including 11 ladies made their way to the starting tees but within ten minutes of the start the rain started to fall and it kept on coming for most of the day.
The course at Hacienda is one of the longest in Spain and the well positioned bunkers and lakes make it an excellent challenge of golf for all handicaps the fairways were very wet and the greens a little slow but very true. Having said that there was some excellent golf played, I was lucky enough to be holding the flag when Martin Ackers rolled in a 45 foot putt on the 13th par 4 hole to make a par.
The par 3s were sponsored by “Mick the Grip” who runs a mobile golf grip replacement service and “Play it Again Golf Balls” who supply recycled and reconditioned golf balls across the Costas. The winners of these were
5th Hole - Tyrone Williams
8th Hole – Tom Brown
12th Hole – Tyrone Williams
15th Hole – Mary Brown
The longest drive for the men on the 18th par 5 hole was won with the longest drive that I have ever seen on this hole by Ryan Morris and the longest drive for the Ladies on the Par 5 4th Hole was won by Joan Williams who has had a long layoff from golf due to ill health but she is well and truly back now.
With just 3 holes to go for most players the skies cleared and the sun came out and all but 3 players finished the game in good spirits, one retired injured and the other two retired water logged.
There were some incredible scores starting with the Ladies in first place with an incredible 38 points was Tracy Ackers who tells me that she has just bought some new clubs, well they certainly worked today. In second place was Mary Brown with a respectable 29 points who received a Sunday lunch for two people kindly donated by the Che! Argentinian Steakhouse in Villamartin Plaza.
On to the men´s competition, there were 32 out of 53 men with scores over 30 points and 11 of these had scores better than 36 points, some fantastic golf. The winner playing off an handicap of 6 with the slope was Dave Morgan with 40 points he beat off Graham Toddhunter who also had 40 points with a better back nine of 20 points and in third place with a great score of 38 points was Steve Morris.
This was the first Golf The Costas competition and the turnout and golf were just fantastic the price to play was just €30 so it was also great value for money golf.
The next competition will be at Hacienda Riquelme on Wednesday 28th July and the price is just €35, buggies are available at €25 each but they only have 20 buggies available so this will be on a first come first served basis, they also have electric trolleys for just €8.
